E-Collar Strap: Conversion Tutorial

A step-by-step tutorial on how to convert a traditional nylon snap-buckle collar into a replacement e-collar strap. The 3/4″ nylon collar used in this video will fit a wide range of e-collars including E-Collar Technologies’ Easy Educators and Mini Educators, plus a variety of Dogtra models. A step-by-step guide is below, plus links to recommended collar brands. There are many different types of replacement straps for e-collars on the market; do your research and find out what works best for your lifestyle and your dog.

Step 1 – Gather supplies. You’ll need a nylon collar sized for your dog (add 3″ to neck size to accommodate the receiver), wax paper, super glue, scissors and a seam ripper.

Step 2 – Using the seam ripper, free the end of the collar that’s sewn around the square plastic keeper. Once the end of the collar is free, flip the strap over and use the seam ripper to carefully remove the loosened stitches.

Step 3 – Using scissors, trim about 1/4″ of the strap to remove the melted edge. The openings in most receivers are too narrow to accommodate the factory-sealed edge.

Step 4 – Coat the trimmed edge of the collar with super glue, then press the edge between two sheets of wax paper, holding firmly to make the edge as flat as possible. The super glue will be dry to the touch in a few seconds.

Step 5 – Reassemble the collar. First, slide the remote collar receiver onto the strap. The receiver will sit closest to the collar’s d-ring. Then, slide the square plastic keeper onto the strap, followed by the smaller plastic keeper. Finally, slide the buckle onto the strap, tucking the excess strap into both plastic keepers.

Step 6 – Adjust the collar for proper fit. Make sure the receiver sits high and tight up on your dog’s neck, a couple inches to the left or right of his trachea.
