NOTE: these were rough clips meant to give an idea of Manolo’s work , the final DVD may have content that is slightly different from this exact clip.

The horse in the clip is a Connemara stallion, he is six and had one lesson with Manolo five and a half month prior to this filming. We thank his owner for allowing us to film him for this project.

In this segment, Manolo is working with a horse with almost no experience working in hand. He demonstrates and explains to the Connemara Day audience the importance of remaining calm and not reacting to an inexperienced horse’s behavior. Manolo demonstrates how to change direction while keeping a healthy bend from ears to tail.

This is a very short clip of some of this work which is explained in more detail in the DVD.

“In-Hand Lessons with Manolo Mendez, Volume I,” is a 3 hour and change introduction to working in hand with horses of all breeds and disciplines. Designed to be practical and un-intimidating, Volume One follows the first five lessons of equestrian and biomechanics lecturer Jillian Kreinbring as she learns to shape, influence and enhance horses’ postures and gaits with the help of a cavesson and a bamboo.

CAVEAT: When you watch this work, please keep in mind that is not the bamboo that is the solution. A bamboo is just a piece of wood and without an educated mind to decide how to use it, where and when to touch the horse and WHY, a bamboo is useless, a gimmick.

In the DVDs, Manolo Mendez discusses and demonstrates everything from how to select bamboo and adjust a cavesson properly, to how to create and regulate forward, halt, turn, change direction while maintaining healthy flexion throughout the horse’s topline, to how to introduce shoulder fore, shoulder in, turn on the haunches, shoulder in – out, to the wall and more…

While Jillian practices the exercises, Manolo provides feedback and steps in to correct common mistakes, ensuring that viewers get a good understanding of what to do, and what to avoid.

The DVD contains additional footage of Manolo working in-hand and demonstrating how to introduce this work and customize it to two different horses. In addition, Manolo shares his way of introducing a young horse to lungeing and how to transition a young horse from lungeing to riding.

The DVD contains a section on “What the Horse’s Body Tells You,” where Manolo points out physical landmarks and what they signify.
