DFS 346 – Late 1944 Nazi German Mach I Prototype

In late 1944, RLM’s Techical Director Siegfried Knemeyer, authorized the construction of a twin HWK bi-fuel liquid rocket powered flying machine whose sole purchase was to break the speed of sound. At war’s end May 1945, the DFS 346 was about 70% complete. The USSR captured the unfinished project and recalled all the workers…at that time the area would become the DDR. In 1946, the 346 was finished and shipped to the USSR along with its workers and their families…about 700 people in all. The 346 was test flown. It did not reach Mach I, instead at 0.92 Mach the 346 went into an uncontrollable spin. The pilot bailed out and the 346 was destroyed hitting the ground.
