Fishing lure screw eyes make make it quick and easy to add hook hangers and tow points to wooden lures. But they need to be installed properly to ensure that your lures are strong.
Types of screw eyes for lures:
Screw eyes come in various different varieties. Nickel plated brass screw eyes are light duty and are prone to corrosion. Marine grade stainless steel make better screw eyes for lure making – stronger and more corrosion proof.
Open screw eyes are great for making jointed baits or for attaching hooks without rings. Just squeeze the eye closed with pliers and you’re done!
I prefer screw eyes with coarse threads for my lures. Coarse threads tend to get a better grip on the wood, especially since they’ll most likely be driven into end grain.
When to use screw eyes in lure making:
I’d normally suggest using a through wire if you’re making a balsa lure, or if your lures might get chewed up by tough, toothy fish. Otherwise, screw eyes generally have sufficient strength to cope with most fishing scenarios.
Tips For Installing Through Wires:
1. Harden the wood first. This gives the screw eyes a tougher surface to bite into. It also stops water from getting into the lure where the screw eye penetrates the wood.
2. Smear a little slow setting epoxy on the screw eye thread before driving it home.
3. For large screw eyes or very hard wood, drill a pilot hole first to prevent the wood from splitting or the screw eye from snapping.
4. Use the longest screw eyes you can fit into your lure. The more thread it has, the stronger it will be.
5. A small countersink hole allows the epoxy and the clear coat to halp seal in the screw eye, preventing twisting.
6. Give fishing lure screw eyes a wipe with alcohol before gluing them in. Removing any oil or grease from the thread allows the epoxy to hold better.
I hope this article helps you fit your fishing lure screw eyes securely and make your lure making faster and easier.
