I just purchased a 19mm Combination Wrench and compare it to Snap-On’s Combination wrench. I also reveal how little difference there is between 3/4″ and 19mm on a 3/4″ Grade 8 Bolt. I also describe some of the different styles of wrenches there are and what benefits I see between them.
It doesn’t seem to matter what brand you buy… quadcopters and their brushless motors come stock with the achilles heel of multirotor flight.
That’s right I’m talking about the lowly prop nut. And they are the first things you should replace on your copter.
The standard aluminum prop cone may work great on airplanes. But on multirotors they are a disaster waiting to happen.
People try all sorts of ways to keep their propellers from falling off. Some swear by using thread lock, but the problem with that is if any of the thread lock gunk gets on your plastic propellers it can act like a solvent and weaken them.
Other people use rubber band prop savers. But propeller balance is critical on multirotors. You can forget about getting jello free video with these things.
I’ve seen tons of crashes that could have been avoided just by upgrading to nylon Locking aircraft nuts. These things are the best I’ve used to keep your props where they should be.
Replacement is easy… Take one of your old aluminum nuts to the hardware store with you.
Most stores have some type of guage in the hardware section… Just screw your existing prop nut onto the guage to confirm what size it is
And find that size in the nylon locking nut section
How convenient, my hardware store even sells them in packages of four.
To install them just remove the old nuts and screw on the nylock nuts.
The internal nylon washer goes on the top. If your previous prop nuts acted as their own washers make sure you also get the proper size washers at the hardware store. Washers make sure even pressure is applied to the propeller reducing the chance of a prop breaking.
Also don’t tighten the nut down too much… Just enough so the nylon washer locks in and the nut prevents the prop from spinning on the shaft.
That’s it… You have just greatly increased your copter’s safety and reliability!
